Tonight's Homework:

Read Chapter 2, section 1. Then answer the following questions as a comment on this blog post:

1. Explain how rocks differ from minerals.
2. Compare and contrast igneous and metamorphic rock formation.
3. Describe the major processes of the rock cycle.
4. Explain one way that the rock cycle can illustrate the principle of conservation of matter

1. The difference between a rock and a mineral is that a mineral is naturally occurring and is an inorganic solid whereas a rock is a mixture of minerals.

2. First, the sedimentary rock changes into a metamorphic rock from heat and pressure. Then the metamorphic rock can then melt and cool into an igneous rock. So metamorphic rocks can turn into igneous rocks at any given time.

3. First, molten rock from a volcano cools and becomes an igneous rock. Then it slowly breaks down when it is exposed to air and water to create sediments. Those sediments are then compacted into sedimentary rock. Heat and pressure may transform sedimentary rock into metamorphic rock. Finally when metamorphic rock melts and hardens, the igneous rock is then formed again.

4. One way that the rock cycle illustrates the principle of conservation of matter is that when pieces of rock are eroded due to ice or wind or maybe water. You may think that they material is destroyed or lost in the cycle but the chemical elements that make up the minerals and rocks are not destroyed.

5. Magma is the melted rock that comes up through the surface of the earth from the core. It then cools and can form igneous rocks. Then when the igneous rocks erode, they form sediments which are little tiny pieces of rock or sand and other minerals. Then those sediments are then compacted together to form sedimentary rocks.

1. A rock is a mixture of such materials, rock fragments, volcanic glass, organic matter, or other natural materials. So a rock is different from a mineral in how that a rock is a mixture of minerals.
2. Igneous rocks form when magma is cooled while a metamorphic rock is formed through heat and pressure from either a sedimentary rock or a igneous rock. They are similar in how that they need each other to form.
3. A sedimentary rock can change by heat and pressure to form a metamorphic rock. The metamorphic tock then can melt and later cool to form and igneous rock. The igneous rock can then be broken into fragments by weathering and erode away. The fragments might later compact and cement together to form another sedimentary rock.
4. Rock cycle processes do not create or destroy matter.
5. Magma is molten rock, sediment is sand like fragments of rocks, and sedimentary rocks seem like sediments glued together based on the illustration in Figure 2.

2)Metamorphic rock is rock that is going to be melted into magma and then is going to be cooled to make igneous rock
3)The major parts of the rock cycle is rock is melted and then cooled, that makes it hard and then it is exposed to it erodes and then it hardens and then melts again. Etc.Etc
4)It can because when stone erodes some people think it gets destroyed and disappears but it just gets blown away of something or it forms a new thing
5)I would define magma as molten rock and sediment as dirt and sedimentary rock as just like cement or stuff compacted together.

4.The changes that take place in the rock cycle never destroy or create matter.

5.When metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous rock melted it become magma. Also magma forms an igneous rock when it cools down.
Sediment forms when sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rock brokes by weathering and erosion. When sediments go through compaction and cementation, it forms sedimentary rock.

1. Minerals are naturally occuring solids, having a definite chmecal structure while a rocks is made up of one or more minerals.
2.Igneous rocks are made from volcanoes(magma, ash, lava, etc.) while metamorphic rocks are rocks that is a rock that is changed by heat and pressure.
3.in the rock cycle, rocks changes into different types of other rocks like igeous could break down into sedimentary rocks and so on and so forth.
4. all three types of rock, every time they change, they still have the same mass.

2) Igneous rocks are formed by cooling magma. Metamorphic rocks are formed when rock changes due to temperature or pressure changes.
3) The major prccesses are weathering and erotion, melting, heat and pressure, cooling, compaction, and cementation.
4) The rock cycle shows rock changing forms because of the prccesses it is subjected to, but even though the rock looks different it has just changed composition.
5) I would say magma is a hot, thick, flowing liquid. I would say sediment is small granules of rock almost like sand. I would say sedimentary rock is like a bunch of smaller rocks pressed together.

1) A rock is the mixture of minerals. Rocks aren't crystalline solids.

2) Igneous rocks form when hot magma or lava cools and hardens.
Basaltic, Granitic and Andesitic rocks are detailed forms of igneous (lava or magma) rocks.
Rocks, changed because of temperature, pressure and hot watery fluids are called metamorphic
rocks. Every form of rock, such as igneous or sedimentary can be changed to a metamorphic
rock. Metamorphic rocks can be represented as folliated rocks, too. Non-folliated rocks
have no layers. Igneous rocks have more types than metamorphic rocks. Both, igneous and metamorphic rocks are changed
and created naturally. Layers don't exist in igneous rocks, but they do in folliated rocks.

3) It is melting. The rock is melting (turning into a hot liquid).

Chapter 2 Section1 Assessment

1. A mineral is a naturally occurring, inorganic solid with a definite chemical composition and an orderly arrangement of atoms; whereas, a rock is a mixture of suck minerals, rock fragments, volcanic glass, organic matter, or other natural materials. In simpler words, rocks contain minerals.
2. Igneous rocks form when magma cools. Metamorphic rocks form when heat and pressure are added to sedimentary rocks or when heat and pressure is added to igneous rocks.
3. The rock cycle starts is a cycle in which rocks can be formed. Magma cools which forms igneous rocks (which can be melted to form magma). Igneous rocks can be weathered or eroded to form sediments OR heat and pressure can be added to them to form metamorphic rocks. Sediments can go through compaction and cementations which forms sedimentary rocks (sedimentary rocks can go through weathering and erosion to form sediments). Heat and pressure can be added to sedimentary rocks to form metamorphic rocks. Metaphoric rocks can melt to form magma and they can be weathered and eroded to form sediments.

1. Rocks are MADE of minerals. Minerals are mixed with each other to create a bigger rock.
2. Igneous rocks are made from rocks melting in magma and metamorphic rocks are mad from heat and pressure.
3. Sedimentary rocks are made from compaction and cementation from sediments. Then the sedimentary rock would melt and turn into a igneous rock or be affected by heat and pressure to create a metamorphic rock. Then the metamorphic rock can melt and also become an igneous rock. When metamorphic rocks and igneous rocks are weathered and erodes, they turn back into sediments.
4. The rock cycle can illustrate by telling us chemical elements that make up minerals and rocks are not destroyed.
5. Magma is a boiling liquid that can melt rocks and turn them into igneous rocks by cooling down. A sediment is a sand form of any kind of rock. A sedimentary rock is a rock that is sediments brought and attached to each other.

2.Igneous and metamorphic rock formation are different. A metamorphic rock could melt into magma and then cool and turn into a igneous rock. Through heat and pressure the igneous rock could turn into a metamorphic rock.

3.First sediments goes through cementation and turn into a sedimentary rock. Then through heat and pressure it turns into a metamorphic rock. After that, it metlts into magma. Then it cools and turns into a igneous rock. Lastly the igneous rock goes through weathering and erosion and turns into sediments. This is the rock cycle and it just repeats.

4.One way that the rock cycle can illustrate the principle of conservation matter is when the rock is eroded and carried away by the wind it may seem like the rock is destroyed. However, it did not get destroyed, it gets redistributed in other forms. That is an example of conservation of matter.

5.I would define magma based on the illustraion in Figure 2 that there was a volcano and inside there is magma. Rocks would be inside the magma and form into different rocks. I would define sediment rock as rocks that are not clumped together, but scattered, and crushed into tiny pieces. I would define sedimentary rock as a rock that is compacted and not scattered all over the place.

3. Starting from a sedimentary rock, heat and pressure will be applied, and then it will turn into a metamorphic rock. After that, the rock will melt, and then turn into magma. After that magma cools and becomes an igneous rock, it will turn into sediments as a result of weathering and erosion. Then, after compaction and cementation, it will turn back into a sedimentary rock.

4. One example from the rock cycle that illustrates the conservation of matter is when, from the result of weathering and erosion, igneous rock turns into sediments. Although they may look differently, they are actually made up of the same minerals.
